The IRS Is Retiring the FIRE System! Meet IRIS, the Future of E-Filing

Beginning with Tax Year 2026 (filings due in 2027), the IRS will retire the FIRE System and require filings to go through IRIS.

At 1099IRIS, we make this transition simple, secure, and stress-free so you can stay focused on your business.

Option 1: File on Your Own

Best if you want full control and have the technical resources. This path requires 3 Steps.

Apply for a New IRIS TCC

Every organization must obtain a new Transmitter Control Code (TCC). Your old FIRE TCC will not work. Approval can take up to 45 days, so apply early. Tip: 1099IRIS can file on your behalf to skip this step.

Choose How You’ll File

IRIS supports:

Free IRS IRIS Portal ideal for smaller filers (up to 250 records per submission).
A2A (Application-to-Application) for high-volume or automated submissions.

Understanding the A2A Option

A2A enables direct bulk integration but requires specialized software and IRS testing with specific test data prior to live transmissions. This is complex and time-consuming; 1099IRIS has completed such testing to save clients setup time.

Option 2: Let 1099IRIS File for You

The simplest, fastest path and only requires 1 Step!

Outsource Filing with 1099IRIS

1099IRIS is fully authorized to transmit through IRIS using our secure Outsource Filing Service. We handle validation, transmission, and confirmation so you don't need a new TCC or testing.

No TCC application
No testing or software setup
We validate & transmit for you

Our team has been e-filing with the IRS for over two decades. Let us help you choose the right path.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions on the IRS IRIS system

The IRS is replacing the FIRE system with the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) starting with Tax Year 2026 filings. IRIS is more secure, modern, and efficient, and all 1099 filings must be submitted through this new platform.

No. While businesses can file directly, it involves applying for a new Transmitter Control Code (TCC), setting up technical integrations, and passing IRS testing. Using 1099IRIS lets you skip these steps — we handle all filing, validation, and transmission for you.

We support all major 1099 forms (including 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, and more) for small, medium, and high-volume filers.

Most filings can be processed within a few hours to a few days of file upload (depending on approaching deadlines and accuracy of data submitted). You’ll receive confirmation of IRS receipt as soon as your submission is complete.
