Frequently Asked Questions
About Form 1095-C
Scope, deadlines, and copies for this specific form.
What is Form 1095-C used for?
Form 1095-C is filed by applicable large employers to report the health coverage offered to each full-time employee, using series 1 and series 2 indicator codes on lines 14 and 16.
When is Form 1095-C due?
- Recipient statement — March 2.
- IRS, on paper — February 28.
- IRS, electronically — March 31.
Any date landing on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday in the District of Columbia moves to the next business day. We track the current year's dates and will flag them when we scope your filing.
What makes the 1095-C harder to file than a 1099?
The indicator codes. Line 14 describes what coverage was offered, line 15 the employee's share of the lowest-cost premium, and line 16 any applicable safe harbour. The combinations have to be internally consistent across all twelve months.
Inconsistent code pairs are the most common trigger for IRS proposed employer shared responsibility assessments, so we validate the code logic before transmitting rather than only checking the file schema.
Does the 1095-C go through IRIS?
No. ACA information returns are transmitted through the IRS AIR system rather than IRIS, using a different schema and transmittal. We file both, so the submission route is handled on our side either way.
Which copy of the form goes where?
- IRS copy — transmitted electronically through the AIR system with the associated transmittal form.
- Recipient statement — furnished to the covered individual or employee.
When we file on your behalf the agency copy is transmitted electronically.
Filing Form 1095-C with 1099 IRIS
How the filing service works. These answers apply to every form type we file.
Do I need a TCC, ID.me account, or IRS IRIS registration?
No. We handle the IRS IRIS filing process using our established IRIS A2A transmission system. You do not need to obtain a TCC, complete IRIS enrollment, or configure IRS accounts yourself.
Can you file large-volume, corrected, or prior-year returns?
We can handle all filing needs:
- Original filings — submit brand-new information returns.
- Corrections — fix and resubmit forms that contain errors.
- Prior years — file late or amended returns for previous tax years, under the rules in force for that year.
Whether you are submitting current forms, making corrections, or catching up on past obligations, we make sure your filings are accurate and compliant.
Can you transmit through the Combined Federal/State Filing Program?
Yes. When applicable, we automatically transmit eligible data through the Combined Federal/State Filing Program as part of the federal filing process. This allows qualifying information returns to be shared with participating states.
Not every state participates, and some states may still require separate direct filing with the state tax agency. State requirements can depend on the form type, payer location, recipient location, filing volume, and whether state withholding was reported. We can review your filing data and determine whether any additional state filing steps are needed.
Can you print and mail recipient copies?
Yes. We generate recipient copies for you to review and approve before they are mailed. This gives you a chance to confirm names, addresses, amounts, and other recipient details before anything is sent.
After approval, we can print and mail recipient copies on your behalf. We handle any volume, from small batches to large recipient files, so you do not have to manage printing, envelopes, postage, or mailing internally.
Why do you offer e-filing instead of software?
1099 IRIS (formerly 1099FIRE) previously sold software for the IRS FIRE System, where users could generate a file and upload it through the IRS website. IRIS is different. There is no simple IRS upload screen where users can browse for a file and submit it themselves. IRIS transmissions must be sent through a secure A2A channel.
Because the A2A connection cannot be packaged as normal downloadable software, we now provide an e-filing service instead. Send us your Excel file, and we handle the data import, validation, recipient PDFs, XML creation, and IRS IRIS transmission on your behalf.
Can you help with TIN matching before filing?
Yes. We can run TIN matching on your behalf before filing. TIN matching compares recipient names and taxpayer identification numbers against IRS records before the forms are submitted.
TIN matching can identify name and taxpayer identification number mismatches before filing. This reduces the chance of IRS notices, backup withholding issues, and correction work after the forms have already been submitted.
